The most important thing with ADHD is correct diagnosis.  It is a hot subject and very hotly debated.  Too many parents use ADHD as an excuse for bad parenting or bad behavior.  No problem can be fixed without knowing what is the cause.  If you believe your child has ADHD take them for professional assessment - a good psychologist or psychiatrist.  Use medication as a last resort.

Doctors vary in the way they apply the definition of the condition to individual children. Some experts argue that it's a set of behavioural characteristics and not a medical condition at all. Children with ADHD are unusually inattentive, hyperactive and show impulsive behaviour at home, school and in social settings – to a degree that is inappropriate for their age and development. Usually a medical professional such as a paediatrician or child psychiatrist, conducts the initial assessment or diagnosis of ADHD. It is also common for psychologists to be involved. Psychologists focus mainly on how the disorder affects behaviour and learning, and what can be done to improve this. There are various ways to measure ADHD. Psychologists use rating scales, questionnaires and other tests for collecting information from the children themselves, their parents/caregivers and their teachers. Children are observed at home and school.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that becomes apparent in some children in the preschool and early school years. It is hard for these children to control their behavior and/or pay attention. It is estimated that between 3 and 5 percent of children have ADHD, or approximately 2 million children in the United States. This means that in a classroom of 25 to 30 children, it is likely that at least one will have ADHD.
